In June 1979 Western Truck Rental Ltd opened for business in Barnstaple with 3 vehicles. The offices were small, parking space was limited and a mechanic helped part-time to keep the vehicles running. The business grew so rapidly that, within three years it was necessary to look for larger premises. In 1982 the company moved to the Station Yard Depot, converting a piece of waste ground by Barnstaple railway station. Within a few months it was transformed into a small but efficient depot with workshop and office facilities – a vast improvement!

During the next five years Western Truck Rental Ltd continued to expand. With a staff of 6 and a fleet of 50 vehicles, plus a growing fleet of contract hire vehicles, it was necessary to move once again. In 1987 we were one of the first companies to design and build our new premises at Roundswell Business Park, Barnstaple which is where we still operate from today.

The company has continued to grow. Approximately 65% of our business is now geared to contract hire – providing anything from cars to articulated trucks. Many of our contract hire customers are based in North Devon but the area covered has constantly expanded and we now have customers in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Avon. Many of our contract hire vehicles operate nationally and in Europe.
